Lower Dolpo Trek, the adventure of two-week duration that leads you to the exceptional scenery of mountains, valley, and alpine woodland with cultural villages of age-old traditions far beyond your imagination. A scenic and cultural destination into Nepal Far North West Himalaya on least explored and traveled the country by other main flow of trekkers due to its remoteness and isolated areas away from modernization world.

Lower Dolpo Trek rewards you with fascinating walks full of delightful views of surrounding high peaks of Kanjiborba and Kagmara peaks and as far towards Dhaulagiri Himalaya due east from its scenic high passes f Numa-la and Baga-la above 5,000 m high. Besides grand scenery walking into nice sleepy villages engaged in farms and cattle herding and breeding sheep-goats and yaks, the main economy of a native of Doplo enriched with old heritage custom of Buddhism and ancient Bon sect practice that still exists in this remote corners of Himalaya.

Lower Dolpo Trek begins with a sweeping flight to land at low warmer Far South West of Nepal around Terrain belt in Nepalgunj city airport, and then continue air journey to reach our trekking point at Jhupal in Lower Dolpo. Walking into nice villages with well-tended farm fields and terraces through Thakuri-Malla people of Hindu religion and then towards higher areas reaching at scenic and magnificent Phoksundo or Ringmo Lake near the village of Ringmo itself.

Enjoying marvelous times around with spectacular scenery where walks leads back taking high and scenic alternative route crossing Baga-la and Numa-la passes to reach at Dho-Tarap lovely valley and nice village of Tokyu. Exploring the local culture of immense interest and visiting its old monasteries, where walk leads on long and wide river valley of Dho-Tarap within Yak summer pastures to reach at interesting Tarakot village of great historical importance, as it is situated on Old and present Trans Himalayan Salt and Caravan trail of western Nepal to Tiber frontier.

After a great interesting time around Tarakot village walk leads back to Dunai the headquarter town of Dolpo to reach at Jhupal for a sweeping scenic flight to Kathmandu via Nepalgunj city with wonderful memories and adventure on Lower Dolpo Trekking.

What to expect on Lower Dolpo Trek?

Lower and Inner Dolpo, a least visited area by outside foreign travelers around beautiful and remote scenic destinations within Himalaya. Here one can witness and explore its medieval time’s villages with strong farm activities as well, cattle herding sheep-goats and yaks.

Lower Upper Dolpo actually an extension of far and South West plateau of Tibet with the arid and windswept terrain, facing scenic views of the green valley and snow-capped peaks. The area around Dolpo located on the least accessibility of transports where both ways flights involve one of the best ways to start and end the wonderful journey.

Lower Dolpo as it is located on remote parts of Himalaya with fewer facilities of the lodge to stay, where camping services the only ways to trek around Lower and Inner Dolpo areas. Walking around nice farm villages and into the serene woodland of pines and spruce with uphill and downhill routes traversing some high passes facing incredible panorama of surrounding beautiful landscapes and high snow-clad peaks.

Places and Culture of interest:

Lower and Inner Dolpo areas the people and villages are similar to Tibetans with culture, custom and with Buddhist religion. Beside Buddhism Dolpo people also worship ancient religious sect of Bon a pre-Buddhism cult, which is almost forgotten in most parts of Tibet-Mongolia and in Nepal Himalaya, but still exists at Western parts of Nepal, an old practice worshipping mountain and other nature spirits.

Around this trek where you can witness villages and monasteries interwoven with both Bon and Buddhist religions. A colorful culture and in festive occasions where you can observe women and men in ritual traditional interesting outfits and dress as it was since past hundred of centuries.

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu and transfer to hotel.

Day 02: Morning sightseeing tour afternoon fly to Nepalgunj.

Day 03: Fly to Jhupal 2,320 m then trek to Dunai 2,850m – 03 hrs.

Day 04: Trek to Chhepka 2,838 m - 06 hrs.

Day 05: Trek to Samdua village 2,960m -06 hrs.

Day 06: Trek to Phoksumdo Lake 3,500 m - 05 hours.

Day 07: Rest day at Phoksumdo Lake for local excursion.

Day 08: Cross Baga La 5,070m and to Phedi 4,470m - 07 hrs.

Day 09: Cross Numa-la 5,190 m and to walk to other Phedi - 08 hrs.

Day 10: Trek to Tokyu Gaon 4,200m via Jeng la 5,090 m - 06 hrs.

Day 11: Trek to Dho Tarap 4,040m- 05 hrs.

Day 12: Trek to Ghyamgar 3,759 m - 07 hrs.

Day 13 : Trek to Tarap Khola 3,652 via Chhyugar 3,440 m - 06 hours.

Day 14 : Trek to Tarakot 2,540 m - 06 hrs.

Day 15: Trek to Dunai – 04 hrs then drive to Jhupal - 01 hr jeep ride.

Day 16: Fly to Kathmandu via Nepalgunj and transfer to hotel.

Day 17: In Kathmandu free day.

Day 18: International departure homeward bound.

Morning optional tour around Kathmandu at places of interest full of World Heritage Sites, the Pashupatinath temple, Bouddhanath (Little Tibet), Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple) & monasteries, old Royal Palaces courtyard; after the tour back to the hotel for an afternoon flight to Nepal Far South West at Nepalgunj city. Nepalgunj located close to UP state of India border, during 50 mins flight excellent views of Mountains, at Nepalgunj in a nice hotel for an overnight halt.

Starting with early breakfast and then connect the flight to Jhupal in Dolpo, on reaching Jhupal meet our trekking/camping staff, and then a short drive to Dunai for an overnight stop. Dunai an interesting and major town of Dolpo districts with time to explore its markets of shops and stores.

After overnight in Dunai, morning walk past market crossing a bridge over Thulo Bheri River and then climb over a ridge to Phoksumdo River valley with views of Kagmara peak, from here trek leads downhill passing farm villages with walnut trees close to a stream at Dhera, a small cattle herders settlements, from here a short climb to Rahagaon village of Thakuri a Hindu local tribe, then downhill walk into forested area to reach overnight camp at Chhepka a small farm village.

From Chhepka near Ankhe area, morning walk with short climb and descend through forest reaching a river bank, from here climb on leaving the forest, from the top walk downhill to forested area leading upstream to cross a small bridge at Ryajik village, trek further to Samdua for overnight stop near the entrance of Phoksumdo National Park.

Morning leads towards our first destination at Phoksumdo Lake after crossing streams, following Pungmo Khola downhill into pine and birch trees to reach upper side of Phoksumdo Khola, after short stops continue to walk to Ringmo village.
An interesting and attractive Tibetan like a village with mud plastered chhorten and Mani (prayer) walls. From here short walk to Phoksumdo Lake for overnight camp by the turquoise Phoksumdo Lake.

After an enjoyable and exciting rest stop at Ringmo village and around Phoksundo Lake, morning walk leads to reach another side of Dolpo area. As our route leads east to cross few passes, walking on a pleasant trail with a steep uphill to reach over Baga-la at 5,070 meters. A steep uphill for few hours to reach on top where you will be rewarded with a super panorama of Phoksumdo lake and Kagmara peaks after a scenic stop walk leads to a long descend to overnight camp at Phedi (bottom of the hill).

From here morning walk leads to another pass at Numa-la at above 5,190 meters, the highest point of the adventure, walk leads to a climb on nice grassy slopes for about three hours and then reaching on top Numa-la, facing grand views of snow capped mountains from Dhaulagiri mountain range to Kagmara peak and looking down at beautiful valleys with dramatic landscapes.

After some days in complete isolation away from villages, today’s walk leads to an interesting village of Tokyu-Gaon, one of the largest village of Inner Dolpo, morning starts with a steep climb for two hours to the top of Jeng-la with grand views of snow-capped mountains with Mt. Dhaulagiri North Face, on enjoying the fantastic views, then descend towards Tarap valley, which is one of the longest beautiful green valley extending about 20 k.m along Tarap Chu River, with more than 10 villages with well-tended farm fields, monasteries and Chorten.
Overnight stop at Tokyu Gaon, an interesting village with an old monastery, afternoon visit the monastery or just relax and observe the local with farming and daily activities.

After Tokyu-gaon, morning walk starts with downhill towards Tarap Chu on wider green valley, this is one of the scenic valleys with many Sheppard’s settlements tending and grazing Yaks and Sheep. Walk continues to our overnight camp at Dho Tarap, this is another interesting village with mix tribes of Tibetans origin and Magar hill tribe people.

From here a long descend to Tarap valley, one of the largest and longest valley of Dolpo area which is about 20 k.m. which stretches following Tarap Chu River most of the way to joins with Thuli Bheri River near Tarakot village, walk leads past Langa with beautiful cascading waterfalls heading due south following the trail after Sisaul and small place of Kesila around Yak herders temporary camps to reach our overnight camp at Ghyamgar.

Today walks on Tarap nice valley, as the trail enters into a narrow gorge with some vegetation of bushes of juniper and wild rose, walk leads past Toltol with a large overhanging cave, around this area might see some wildlife like Naur or Blue Sheep and other animals.
As the walking progress reaching a confluence of River Tarap Chu and Lang Khola, overnight camp by the river after a long day walk of about 6 hours.

Start morning walk passing smaller villages and then into a small wooded area, following river all the way at Tarakot, a large and interesting village with old history and well maintained terraced farm fields, Tarakot with an old historical fortress (Dzong or Kot) guarding the village.
Tarakot village houses famous old Sandul Gomba located at a junction of Barbung Khola and Tarap Chu River where overnight camp situated.

After a great time at Tarakot, our last day walk takes to Dunai and then with a short drive to Jhupal for the flight back to Kathmandu. The morning starts following spread out villages a, walking on the much wider trail with few short uphills into a valley and downhill towards Thulo Bheri River valley to reach at Dunai town.
From here time permitting with lunch stop then a jeep drive to Jhupal to make the day shorter. Last night in Dolpo celebrates the night among fellow staff and porters.
