Everest and Khumbu’s Amphu Labtsa-La Pass Trekking is an adventure quite different from other normal moderate and challenging treks. The walks lead to far-flung corners of southern Everest, on least ventured hidden corners of eastern Khumbu. Adventure far from human habitation and modern civilization for more than a week, within absolute rugged mountain wilderness.

The trek can be more exciting and enjoyable, expecting the unexpected as it comes. Where all trekkers needs to be in good physical shape with sound health on joining this wonderful adventure. The trek leads far from the villages and away from the main busy trekking trails, off the beaten tracks.

Although a tough walk with steep climbs, but rewards with spectacular scenery of towering peaks throughout the treks.

Everest and Khumbu Amphu Labtsa-La Pass Trekking, is a perfect and ideal high altitude walks for all types of trekkers. Especially for those people, who are interested in a touch of adrenaline sports activities, this is the best trek to choose.

The adventure to Everest and Khumbu Amphu Labtsa-La Pass Trekking begins arriving at the busy town of Lukla. After a short flight from Kathmandu to Lukla’s Tenzing & Hillary Airport, one of the busiest airstrips around the Himalayas.

The walk starts from Lukla, the major town and gateway for various adventures around the high

Khumbu valley of Everest. Leaving the main trail and Lukla town, the adventure leads to the high ridges of Naulekh or Kalo-Himal. Which forms the boundary between Dudh Koshi River valley and the popular routes from the hidden areas of Hinku valley.

Reaching the high rocky ridges and crossing Zatwar-La pass, the trek gets more exciting reaching Hinku valley. Enclosed by tiers of green, and rocky hills with high snow peaks reaching a lovely forest of rhododendron and pine trees.

Hinku Valley is also a summer pasture of local villagers’ yaks and cattle grazing areas. On walks coming across shades and huts of cattle herder temporary camps around nice grassy meadows. The walk proceeds towards Mera Peak areas, from a nice small place of Thagnak, reaching Khare and Kongma Dingma.

The trail leads close to Mera Peak base camp and towards Hongu Valley, our route diverts to cross Mera-La pass. Then entering the remote isolated Hongu Valley and Seto / Panch Pokhari (five small glacial ponds). Where the route of Makalu West Col / Sherpani pass and Baruntse Himal base camp joins.

After acclimatization and preparation rest days, the adventure leads to climbing over the high Amphu Labtsa-La Pass. The highest point of the adventure, where all members and crews will be supported by main or fixed ropes. Our expert guides will make full precautionary measures against sudden accidents.

After a safe climb and traverse from Hongu areas, reaching Imjatse valley near Island Peak base camp. From here onwards on the return journey back to Lukla reaching the main popular trail. The walk leads to Chukung and Dingboche a lovely settlement with nice, lovely cozy lodge accommodations.

From Dingboche onwards feeling in high spirits after completing the toughest part of the adventures. The walk leads back to civilization, after being in a sheer mountainous zone, away from human habitations.

The walk follows a gentle trail down and ups to beautiful Tengboche and the monastery. Enjoy the monastery tour of the great religious and cultural interest of Buddhism religion, along with fantastic views of Mt. Everest.

Finally, the adventure slowly comes to an end reaching the famous Namche Bazaar and then to Lukla for the last overnight stop. Next early morning a scenic flight brings you to Kathmandu, after an overwhelming adventure and memorable experience on Everest & Khumbu’s Amphu Labtsa-La Pass Trekking.

Transfer to Kathmandu domestic airport, for exciting 35-minutes flight to Lukla and take in the beautiful Himalayan mountain scenery. On landing at Lukla’s Tenzing Hillary Airport, which serves as the entrance to various adventure around Everest region. From Lukla after getting organized with all the baggage carried by our strong porters. Trek begins on leaving Lukla heading north, through small farm settlements. Entering a lovely forest of rhododendron and pines, as trail leads to climb for short while. Reaching a wide open field amidst woods, where a small farm house located of Chutanga. Overnight camp is set on a nice grassy field close beneath the rocky ridge of Naulekh or Kalo Himal.

Morning clearing the camp at Chutanga, having breakfast served by our camping cook with separate unit of kitchen. Walk leads to a steep climb for some hours to the ridge top of Naulekh or Kalo-Himal. Then heading to cross over Zatwar-La pass at above 4,500 m, facing grand views of Dudh Koshi River valley towards south with Kwangde peaks. From the top of Zatwar-La pass a long descent enters the hidden valley of Hinku at Thuli-Kharka. Overnight camp in field close the dense forest surrounding.

After a pleasant overnight, in the serene harmony of tranquil surroundings, from Thuli-Kharka, morning starts with short descent. As walk continues facing views of Peak 43 and Kusum Kanguru peaks, the trail leads following the quiet path. A pleasant walk with grand views of Mera Peak in the east, as trail follows into dense rhododendron and pine forest. Reaching a small place at Mosum Kharka, from here enter a wide open valley within a pasture field. A nice spot a summer pasture areas of local Yak herder, this lovely place is known at Gondishung. A place with a small wooden huts of stone wall enclosures with a small 200 years old small Buddhist shrines. From here another hour walk to Tangnak for overnight camp, another lovely place and a yak herder’s settlement having few small shades serving as tea houses and simple lodges.

From Thagnak, after a pleasant rest day, morning walk leads further east on leaving the tree line behind. The route leads over moraine of rocks and dry glaciated section, walking close towards a Charpatte Tal (Four sided lake). Slowly the walk advance amidst dry and barren high terrain covered in rock cairns reaching at the junction. Where route of Hongu valley and Mera Peak base camp separates, our trail diverts heading east with short climb. On reaching a small ridge top, a quick descend leads to Kongma Dingma for overnight camp. The camp within a deep valley enclosed by high rocky walls of towering cliffs and snow-capped peaks. Includes grand close views of Mera Peak towards South East direction, quite tempting to reach its summit. The highest trekking peaks in Nepal Himalayas and quite popular among climbers.

Leaving the end of Hinku valley and Mera Peak area, heading towards higher within yak pasture grounds. As climb leads to beautiful, remote Hongu Valley, the walk heads directly into the heart of world’s highest mountain range. After a steep climb over high Mera-La, facing magnificent views of surrounding snow-capped peaks and high alpine valleys. The trek continues until reaching Seto Pokhari. Which means ‘White Lake’ and is the first of a series of five lakes around the upper basin of Hongu valley.

A necessary rest day as well for acclimatization, preparation for the final tough climb on the highest spot of the adventure. Panch or Seto Pokhari a glacial pond which is close to Baruntse Himal. As well on the route to Makalu and Barun valley via high Sherpani pass and West Col of Makalu. Enjoy the full day checking the gear for the exciting climb on top Amphu Labtsa-La Pass.

Today a short day hike, and exciting to reach at the base of our main highlight of the adventure. The morning walk follows on rough rugged path of few hours to the bottom of Amphu Labtsa-La Pass. Overnight camp is set on the best available flat ground on rocky moraine areas. Afternoon free for rest, as our guide and staff will check the safe accessible route to the top of Amphu Labtsa-La Pass. The guide and staff will fix ropes where necessary on technical sections for safe climb and descent towards other side around Imjatse Valley.

The longest and toughest day of the journey, starting for the climb as early as possible on clearing the camp. Then head for a steep climb carrying packed lunch for the long day. Follow our lead guide, climb on rocks and icy slopes and narrow ledges, after being well equipped wearing proper gear and crampons. As the climb progresses with strenuous effort until the top of Amphu Labtsa-La Pass is reached. On reaching the highest point of the adventure, having time for rest and catching breath after a long haul. Enjoy the grand vista of surrounding giant peaks of Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse with Makalu and Baruntse. Includes close look of Ama Dablam as far towards Lhotse Shar with Island Peaks and of the beautiful Imjatse valley. From the top of Amphu Labtsa all members, crews and porters need to be belayed for safe descent. On reaching at the northern base camp of Amphu Labtsa at the rim of Imjatse valley. Having rest and continue walk heading towards an ablation valley by the side of Imjatse Glacier. Close to a spot called Parsya Gyab, which is near the Island Peak Base Camp for overnight camp.

On completing the hardest, tough parts of the adventure, with last overnight in tented camp. From here onwards overnight in the comfort of nice cosy lodges, as the route leads on main trekking trails. Leaving the last camp at Parsya Gyab close from towering Island Peak, walk leads north-west of Imjatse valley. The walk is pleasant with short steep ups and downs over rocky moraine and icy trail. After few hours of good walk reaching Chukung a small settlement with number of nice, simple lodge. Enjoy lunch at the lodge restaurants, a change of taste and experience after camping meals. Afternoon an easy trek for few hours on a wide valley to Dingboche for overnight stop in the comfort of nice lodges.

An easy day walk of the adventure, following the downhill trail to join the main trail to Namche Bazaar. Which leads to Tengboche Monastery, a few hour to Pangboche village, which is on route to Ama Dablam base camp. From Pangboche with closest views of Ama Dablam descent to a bridge with few hour climb up to Tengboche. Located amidst beautiful surrounding of an arrays of peaks with views of Mt. Everest, Lhotse and Nuptse. Includes Ama Dablam, Kantega, Tharmasarku and Kwangde peaks within a green lovely forest. At Tengboche check into a nice lodge, with time to visit the majestic and impressive monastery of great cultural interest.

Enjoying the comfort of nice accommodation in a good lodge at Tengboche and Dingboche. Morning after breakfast walk to famous Namche Bazaar, a lovely, pleasant walk down to a river and up. A short steep up to Shanasa village, then on nice, pleasant wide scenic trail to Namche Bazaar. From Namche Bazaar a long and last day walk of the journey to Lukla, after breakfast, walk down to Dudh Koshi River. The walk is easy and pleasant to Monjo village located at the entrance and exit gate of Sagarmatha National Park. After refreshing rest continue walk crossing a long bridge over Dudh Koshi River to Phakding village. A possible lunch stop in Phakding, afternoon on gradual path through lovely villages with last hour climb to Lukla. At Lukla check into a nice lodge, having time for last night ceremony dinner with fellow members, staff and guide.

Best seasons for Amphu Labtsa-La Pass Trek.

The best time this wonderful adventure is mid-spring from April to May, and then autumn / fall. Starts from September and ends in November.
April to May during spring one of the best favorable time around the Himalayas, when days are longer with enough sunny days. Morning and late afternoon till night time will be cold, can expect snow sometimes above 2,800 m onwards.
But lively season with wildflowers in bloom, especially the rhododendron and magnolias flowers, makes the hills and valley spectacular.

Autumn / fall is another best favorable time for this adventure, most days are clear and fine. But shorter day due to limited sunlight hours, morning and late afternoon till night can be much cold. Expect snow-fall sometimes during the trek around high Khumbu valleys.

Please Note:
The flight from Lukla sometimes can be delayed or leads to cancellation sometimes, due to weather condition. The other information is on busy peak season of trekking around Everest and Khumbu region. Due to heavy air traffic, the flight operates from Manthali airport of Ramechap district. Which is about
150 km takes approx. 4-5 hour drive from Ramechap to Kathmandu or vice-versa.
The change of flight from Ramechap, as per the notice of Nepal Civil Aviation, started from 2021 October till present. We will upgrade the details and information regarding the change of airport, after booking this trip with us.

FAQ: (Frequently Asked Questions):

01:      What type of people and age group can join on this trekking adventure?
Nearly all types of people and age group of minimum 18 to 60 years can join on this adventure to Amphu Labtsa-La Pass Trek. All members should be physically fit and in sound health with good medical background to encounter the difficulty on this exciting adventure.

02:      How many people will be on this trek, can anyone travel solo?
Depending upon the number of booking for this trek as season wise, as this is a tough and adventurous treks. Where trekkers can choose from mid-spring of April to May, and in autumn / fall from September to November. We run this treks minimum of two times on each seasons, but if we get more demand and request we will run several treks every best seasons of the year. For this trek we do organize solo or

individual trekkers, but the cost will be much higher than in group. The best is minimum of 2-3 person and maximum of 6 to 8 person, makes the trek better and enjoyable.

03:      Can we climb Mera peak on route to Amphu Labtsa-La treks?
Yes, one can have the option for the climb to Mera peak on this wonderful adventure. But one needs to book early well in advance as a request to include peak climbing and for the trek. View Nepal needs to extend the itinerary for few days from Kongma Dingma near Mera Peak base camp. For climb of Mera Peak and trek to Amphu Labtsa-La, will be organized as private with tailor made itinerary days.

04:      Do we spend in local lodges or in tented camps on this trekking?
More or less it is a tented camping trekking till Chukung and Dingboche is reached. As this route is less ventured by main flow of trekkers, and there are no lodge accommodation and foods available. View Nepal will provide all camping equipment with separate kitchen units of expert cook, kitchen and camping staff. Including expert guides and strong porters to carry all the baggage and camping gear and foods for the trek till Dingboche, then in good lodges all the way to Lukla.

05:      Are there any facilities for charging electronic items and internets?
On leaving Lukla, there are no electricity available till Dingboche is reached after walking around Hinku and Hongu Valley with Amphu Labtsa-La pass. In this situation, trekkers can carry portable solar panel that

can fit outside the back pack. For small generator can be used the company will provide but at extra cost per person.

As for internet and Wi-Fi there will be no good services after Lukla till Dingboche and Namche Bazaar on the other side of Khumbu valley. One can buy a Data package in Kathmandu with local SIM at reasonable price, even if it works but it will be slow and disturbing, due to weather and landscapes wise.

But mobile / cell phone with local SIM works around most of the areas even in remote corners of Himalayas.
